How It Started
helping those In need
Head Outdoors was set up by Adam and Rhiannon Stiling in 2017 after they asked for charity donations at their wedding instead of receiving gifts to fund a project focussed on their love of water sports and its positive mental health impact.
Working with Rob Howlett and Jo Sheppard at Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre (HHOEC), the couple contacted Pebble Lodge, a residential service caring for young people with mental health issues. The generous donations of their friends and family resulted in enough funding to cover half day weekly activity sessions for two years.
Jo and Rob have spearheaded this programme with additional support from volunteers who have willingly given their time and expertise in coaching and supporting these teenagers.
Having demonstrated the success of this programme through positive outcomes for the young people and their care staff, the Head Outdoors charity was established to both support Pebble Lodge in a more sustainable manner and to expand the delivery of services benefiting more young people in this area.
"Everyone involved has been energised by this initiative and the positive impact it has had for the community, and everyone involved in the project."

How We Fund The Project
Head Outdoors is focused on financially supporting access to outdoor team activities in the local area for young people who have mental health challenges. The charity pays for services provided by the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre (at a charitable rate) for weekly session at the centre.
At the moment, the charity is funding the Pebble Lodge weekly sessions and the intention is to increase its reach to other similar groups of young adults targeting delivery of at least one more session per week. In 2020 the charity is aiming to raise a minimum of £14,400 to achieve this objective. It aims to do this through personal donations, local business support and applying for local and national grants.
