What we Do

our mission
to help young people

Head Outdoors works with carefully selected providers to deliver outdoor activity services for young people battling with mental health challenges.

CLIMBING

We are currently working alongside Pebble Lodge Hospital and The Climbing Project based in Poole, Dorset.

The Head Outdoors Charity is proud to have supported many young people within in patient services the opportunity to experience bouldering and climbing.

Each session start with a energised welcome and a warm up to support flexibility and movement. Each young people is guided on the climbing walls to ensure that they are confident in reaching their personalised climbing goals.

We are very happy to hear that some young people are now able to climb solo without an instructor, this means that the climbing skill can continue into their recovery into the community and future lives.

The Pebble Climbing project is an ongoing session due to its value to the young people and their confidence in the community.

PARENT WORKSHOPS

An application was granted to support the South Coast Medical Group with a small amount of funds to benefit parents and carers of those who self harm. The workshop helps parents and carers learn about the topic of self harm and within the ten weekly sessions they will come away with tools and confidence to support their young person.

The application was to fund food and drinks for the parents to ensure that they are comfortable in a very challenging session.

The FLASH (Families learning about self harm) group was created by The Ministry of Parenting CIC who know that recovery starts within the home.

Outdoor Activities

Head Outdoors funded activities cover the natural therapeutic and inspiring environments of both the sea and woodland. Participants learn all the skills they need to pursue the activity safely and socially. Activities involve sailing, power boat driving, kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, fire-building and much more. These activities have shown to improve the young participants’ overall wellbeing.

Wellbeing Support

With a highly experienced team, HHOEC ensure that the activity staff we fund are trained in providing an holistic support for activity participants. This means that the person’s practical and emotional needs are met throughout. Staff are qualified in mental health first aid and can respond effectively to any emotional challenge facing the young participant on any day. See Impact.

Team Building

An important aspect of group activities for anyone taking part is good communication and supporting individual strengths. Not only do our young participants enjoy this aspect, but so do the care staff. Team-building can improve social anxiety and self-esteem, as everyone’s input is treated with importance and merit.
